Liu Ding on Curating as Artistic Practice at Whitechapel Symposium

On April 19, 2013, Liu Ding, a Beijing-based artist and curator, delivered a presentation titled 'I Simply Appear in the Company of…' at the Whitechapel Gallery’s symposium called 'Artist as Curator: Collaborative Practices.' His discussion emphasized how artists approach curating, specifically how they weave in the work and insights of fellow creators into their exhibitions. Liu Ding touched on engaging with art history, researching exhibitions, designing spaces, and integrating publishing into artistic endeavors. His 2008 initiative, Liu Ding's Store, examined the creation of value in the art world. He represented China at the 2009 Venice Biennale and co-curated 'Little Movements: Self-Practice in Contemporary Art,' which was to be showcased at Museion, Bolzano in June 2013. Additionally, he co-curated the 2012 Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale and planned to present 'Almost Avantgarde' at Tate Modern in 2013.
