Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu to lead Yokohama Triennale 2024 with theme 'Wild Grass: Our Lives'

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu have been chosen as the co-artistic directors for the eighth Yokohama Triennale, scheduled for March 15 to June 9, 2024. This marks a continuation of the trend of having non-Japanese leadership, which began with Raqs Media Collective in 2020. The event will take place at the recently upgraded Yokohama Museum of Art and will center on the theme 'Wild Grass: Our Lives,' drawing inspiration from Lu Xun's 1927 work. The organizing committee, led by Kondo Seiichi, aims to create an accessible guide to contemporary art by juxtaposing historical and modern works, highlighting oppressive conditions since the Cold War. Liu Ding, known for his focus on Chinese art and culture, and Carol Yinghua Lu, director of the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum, have collaborated since 2007 on various projects.
