Liu Chuang's video work explores Bitcoin mining, technology, power, and the displacement of ethnic minorities.

exhibition · 2026-04-20

In 2018, Liu Chuang created a three-channel video titled Bitcoin Mining and Field Recordings of Ethnic Minorities, which delves into the relationship between historical power dynamics and modern digital frameworks within China. Spanning 40 minutes, the work integrates archival footage alongside a voiceover that connects the 5th century BCE to current bitcoin mining practices. It reflects on the impact of technology on societal evolution and the cultural integration of ethnic minorities, citing historical figures such as Stalin and Ho Chi Minh, as well as scholars like Willem van Schendel and James C. Scott. The piece references films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and notes Apple's acquisition of FingerWorks in 2005. Initially presented in late 2018 at Cosmopolis #1.5, it has since been featured in multiple exhibitions, currently showcased at Protocinema and Centre Pompidou.
