Little Island: New York's Spectacular Floating Park Opens

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Little Island, a spectacular floating park designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick, opened on May 21, 2021, in New York's Hudson River. Funded by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation amid controversy, the $260 million project is hailed as a symbol of the city's post-pandemic rebirth. The park rests on 280 concrete pillars planted in the riverbed, located off the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. It features 350 species of trees and flowers on undulating green terrain. Beyond nature, Little Island includes a 687-seat amphitheater, a small stage called The Glade, and a central piazza for gathering and dining. A residency program and event calendar launching in June will offer performances and shows for all ages.
