Little Big Things: Storp Collection of Perfume Bottles at Palazzo Mocenigo
Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice, a museum dedicated to textile and costume history since 1985, reopened in 2013 after a renovation by architect Pier Luigi Pizzi, adding perfume history to its focus. The museum now hosts "Little Big Things," an exhibition of over 200 perfume bottles from the Storp family collection, owned by the German fragrance company Drom (founded 1911 in Munich). The exhibition, curated by Chiara Squarcina under scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, presents the collection for the third time ever, on loan from brothers Ferdinand and Andreas Storp. The show explores four universal themes—divine, love, protection, identity—through a millennial history of perfume containers, from ancient clay oil vessels (3rd-2nd century BC) to Roman, Persian, and Syrian artifacts, medieval pomanders, and 20th-century designer flacons by Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Balenciaga, Bulgari, and Elsa Schiaparelli. Schiaparelli's iconic Shocking Pink bottle from the 1930s is highlighted. The exhibition runs until January 6, 2015.
