Lithuanian Pavilion at Venice Biennale Opens Call for Volunteer Beachgoers
The Lithuanian Pavilion, winner of the Golden Lion for Best National Participation at the 2019 Venice Biennale, has launched an open call for volunteers to join its performance piece "Sun & Sea (Marina)." The work, set in a space inside the Marina Militare near the Arsenale—opened to the public for the first time—transforms the venue into an artificial beach where performers sing melancholic songs. Organizers invite people of all ages, genders, and races to become vacationers under artificial sunlight for at least three consecutive hours. Participants must bring their own swimsuit and towel. The performance runs every Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm until October 26, 2019, and is curated by Lucia Pietroiusti. Created by artists Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė (filmmaker), Vaiva Grainytė (writer), and Lina Lapelytė (artist), the installation features sand and equipment for a perfect beach holiday. Volunteers can register online, indicating preferred time, willingness to sing, and whether they will bring friends, children, or pets. Registrations must be submitted at least two days before the chosen date. The audience observes from a balcony above.
