Liste Basel 2023: Best Stands at the Art Fair

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

Liste Art Fair, once held in a decaying brewery, has moved to a conventional hall above Art Basel, trading its former magic for convenience. The circular layout remains a distinctive feature. This year's edition saw high-quality presentations, mostly solo shows, and a positive atmosphere free from the crises of previous years (war in Eastern Europe, COVID-19). Eight standout stands were selected: Vin Vin (Vienna/Naples) showed Cecilia De Nisco's noir and fluo paintings on walls intervened by Paulina Semkowicz; Capsule (Shanghai) presented Gao Yuan's dreamy acrylic paintings that also serve as backdrops for his animations; Vacancy (Shanghai) featured Chen Ting-Jung's sound installation with microphones on motorized arms and papier-mâché sculptures on marine buoys; Theta (New York) displayed Elizabeth Englander's totemic wood and metal sculptures referencing religion and ritual, made from recycled materials; PHD Group (Hong Kong) offered an immersive stand by Sasaoka Yuriko with a screen, exercise balls, and a 2018 video about Japanese society post-2011 tsunami; Gian Marco Casini (Livorno) showed Clarissa Baldassarri's installation with a microphone, metal elements, and a printer outputting sound data; Valeria Cetraro (Paris) presented Angelique Aubrit & Ludovic Beillard's human-sized puppets with wooden heads and hands, reflecting on coexistence; Afriart (Kampala) featured Emmie Nume's paintings at the border of embroidery, capturing essence and emotion in portraits.
