Liste Art Fair 2016 Showcases Global Emerging Artists with Political Edge
The 2016 Liste art fair in Basel featured eleven newcomer galleries, signaling an increased global focus. Kris Lemsalu presented 'Genetic Misunderstanding' (2016) at Temnikova & Kasela from Tallinn, creating porcelain and textile wall works that incorporate mass-produced animal rugs with ceramic additions. Mahmoud Khaled's photographic series 'Do you have work tomorrow?' (2013) at Gypsum, Cairo explores gay hook-up conversations in Egypt through Grindr screenshots. Marlon de Azambuja exhibited 'Grain Elevators' (2015) at Instituto de Visión, Bogotá, altering a Bernd and Hilla Becher monograph by blacking out cooling tower images. Kamrooz Aram's collages at Green Art Gallery, Dubai juxtapose ancient Iranian art with references to Adolf Loos's architecture and writings. Li Ming's installation at Antenna Space, Shanghai combines video of runners with lightboxes featuring Muhammad Ali's poem 'Me, We', referencing Glenn Ligon's 2007 work. The fair demonstrated more enlightening content compared to previous years' European MA program offerings.
