Lisson Gallery opens fifth space in Shanghai on March 22
Lisson Gallery, founded in London in 1967 by Nicholas Logsdail, will open its fifth location in Shanghai on March 22, 2019. The new space is housed in a former 1930s warehouse on Huqiu Road, previously used by the Central Bank of China during the republican era. The inaugural exhibition, "Love is Metaphysical Gravity," features works by Marina Abramović, Shirazeh Houshiary, Richard Long, and Tatsuo Miyajima. The gallery already operates two spaces in London and two in New York, having expanded to the US in 2016 with two Chelsea locations. It also had a Milan space for six years, closed in 2017. The Shanghai venue is situated on "Museum Street," near the Rockbund Art Museum, Fosun Foundation, and Christie's. This move follows a trend of Western galleries and institutions establishing outposts in Shanghai, including Perrotin, Gagosian, David Zwirner, De Carlo, and White Cube. The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo exhibited at Rockbund in spring 2018, and the Centre Pompidou and Fondation Cartier have also opened satellite spaces in the city.
