Lisson Gallery Launches AR App to View Art at Home

digital · 2026-04-27

Lisson Gallery, with spaces in London, New York, and Shanghai, launched an augmented reality app on April 26, 2020, developed by software company Augment. The app allows users to visualize 100 artworks from the gallery's collection in their own homes, using a self-service SaaS platform. Augment, whose clients include Coca-Cola and Logitech, partnered with Lisson as its first art organization collaboration, according to CEO Dimitri Duffeleer. The gallery also opened an online exhibition, Painting Problems, featuring new works by Rodney Graham, on May 6, 2020, presented simultaneously in Frieze Art Fair's Online Viewing Room. The app was developed over 18 months. Victoria Mitchell, Lisson's communications manager, stated that users can select works like a Carmen Herrera sculpture and view it in their garden. This move reflects a broader trend among galleries adopting digital tools and AR due to the COVID-19 lockdown, following similar initiatives by David Zwirner, Larry Gagosian, Oliver Miro, and Massimo De Carlo.
