Lisetta Carmi's Sardinian photographs exhibited at MACTE Termoli

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The MACTE Museum of Contemporary Art in Termoli is currently showcasing 'Voci allegre nel buio', which features approximately seventy never-before-seen photographs by Lisetta Carmi (born in Genoa, 1924). These images, taken in Sardinia between 1962 and 1976, were inspired by Maria Giacobbe's writings on poverty. Carmi's work includes depictions of landscapes, people, and rituals, such as the Costa Smeralda prior to its development and the Candelaria festival in Orgosolo. This exhibition reinterprets a prior display in Nuoro and emphasizes Carmi's exploration of Italy's societal transformations from the late 1950s to the 1970s. A wealthy Jewish woman and sibling of painter Eugenio Carmi, she shifted from music to photography, capturing diverse subjects, including Ezra Pound in 1966, before pursuing spirituality in India.
