Lisetta Carmi's Photography Retrospective at Museo di Roma in Trastevere

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Museo di Roma in Trastevere presents 170 photographs by Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924), spanning her two-decade career from 1960 to 1980. Carmi, a Jewish Italian who abandoned piano performance for photography at age 36, documented the brutal labor of dockworkers in Genoa's port in 1964, followed by images inside Italsider steel plants where she organized classical music listening sessions for workers. Her 1966 portraits of Ezra Pound won the Premio Niépce for Italy; Umberto Eco, a jury member, stated that Carmi's images reveal more about Pound than any written text. She also photographed the transgender community in Genoa's historic center, publishing the book 'I Travestiti' in 1972. A 1968 series documenting childbirth at Ospedale Galliera was used in obstetrics wards to calm expectant mothers. In 1976, Carmi met guru Babaji Herakhan Khan in India, leading her to abandon photography in 1984 after his death and dedicate herself to meditation. The exhibition includes a video interview with curator Giovanni Battista Martini.
