Lise Toubon, French collector and art patron, dies at 87

Lise Toubon, a French art collector and patron who played a key role in the development of the contemporary art scene in Paris's 13th arrondissement, died on March 1, 2021, at age 87. Born in 1933 in Metz, she was known for her frankness and energy. After the death of her first husband, Michel Strauss, she managed his machine-tool import-export business while raising two children. She became a bold collector and friend of artists, including Sylvia Bataille. She later married Jacques Toubon, who served as mayor of the 13th arrondissement, minister of justice, and minister of culture. Through her influence, the 13th arrondissement became a hub for contemporary art. She founded the association 13e Art, organized exhibitions under the glass roof of the Gare d'Austerlitz, and launched the pioneering gallery fair "Austerlitz autrement." She supported the development of the Rue Louise-Weiss gallery district, where young galleries like Perrotin, Jousse, and Praz-Delavallade started. She also defended controversial public art projects, including Daniel Buren's installation at the Palais-Royal and Christo's wrapping of the Pont-Neuf. Catherine Millet, who wrote the obituary, recalls Toubon's salon where she hosted both artists and politicians, with works by Bill Beckley on display. Toubon was photographed by Alain Jacquet in 1994.
