Lisbon's MAAT Museum Reports 550,000 Visitors in First Year
Lisbon's MAAT – Museu Arte Arquitetura Tecnologia celebrated its first anniversary on October 4, 2017, with over 550,000 visitors, 23 exhibitions, 432 artists, and 1,389 works displayed. The museum, a private initiative by EDP Foundation, occupies a former power station and a new building by Amanda Levete's Studio AL_A. It has won multiple awards including Novelty of the Year – Time Out Lisbon Awards, Design Prize 2017, and Museum Architecture of the Year – LCD Awards 2017. Current exhibitions include Bill Fontana's 'Shadow Soundings' (until February 12, 2018), which uses 12 live audio channels from the 25 de Abril Bridge, and 'Tension & Conflict. Art in video after 2008' (until March 19, 2018), curated by Pedro Gadanho and Luísa Santos. The broader Lisbon creative scene includes the LX Factory creative hub, Arco Lisboa art fair at Cordoaria Nacional, and the HCB – Hub Criativo Beato, a 20-building innovation hub developed with Startup Lisboa and Factory Berlin, with a 50-year lease costing €7 million.
