Lisa Abbott-Canfield and Bettina Blohm Exhibit Abstract Paintings at SUNY Old Westbury
From February 1 to March 15, 2012, the Amelia A. Wallace Gallery at SUNY College at Old Westbury presented an exhibition featuring abstract painters Lisa Abbott-Canfield and Bettina Blohm. Curated by Hyewon Yi, the gallery director, the show highlighted two New York artists working with large organic forms. Abbott-Canfield's muted grays and blacks create melancholic, lyrical abstractions, as seen in works like "In Completing What Loving Is Needing" (2011) and "Living Fossil" (2011). Blohm's brightly colored paintings reference landscapes, particularly small towns in the Catskills, with works from 2011 measuring 68 x 84 inches. Her 2010 pieces explore color combinations reminiscent of Joseph Albers's theories, while earlier works from 2008-09 include cloud forms and cross-like branches. Both artists engage with the tension between representation and abstraction, contributing to New York's ongoing painting tradition spanning three generations. The exhibition was located at the Campus Center, Main Level Route 107 in Old Westbury, New York.
