Lindokuhle Sobekwa Wins 2025 Deutsche Börse Prize

award · 2026-04-24

Lindokuhle Sobekwa, a South African photographer, has won the £30,000 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for his 2024 book titled 'I carry Her photo with Me', published by MACK. The other nominees—Cristina De Middel, Rahim Fortune, and Tarrah Krajnak—each received £5,000. Sobekwa's project combines personal notes, family photos, and imagery to explore his sister's life after she went missing, shedding light on family stories and the broader context of disappearances in post-Apartheid South Africa. Shoair Mavlian, who leads the jury and runs The Photographers' Gallery, praised Sobekwa's treatment of loss and memory. Sobekwa's photography journey began in 2012, and he joined Magnum Photos in 2022. An exhibition of the finalists’ work is showing at The Photographers' Gallery in London until June 15.
