Linda Lee Alter's 500-work bequest challenges gender stereotypes at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From November 17, 2012, to April 7, 2013, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia showcased 'The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making their World.' This exhibition was significantly enriched by the donation of over 500 pieces from collector Linda Lee Alter, which aimed to balance the institution's predominantly male collection. Artists featured included Judy Chicago, Daisy Youngblood, Barbara Takenaga, Catherine Murphy, Kara Walker, and Jenny Holzer. Visitors encountered Diane Edison's Self-Portraits, while Alice Neel's Claudia Bach Pregnant stood in contrast to Judith Schaechter's stained glass Child and Toy. Ann Agee's ceramic Birthing Class honored traditional rituals. The exhibition highlighted the lack of a singular trend among women artists and prompted discussions on their artistic contributions. Critics encouraged audiences to challenge stereotypes through the varied artworks.
