Lincoln's Sincil Bank Art Project launches with Zabou mural of Isaac Newton
The Sincil Bank Art Project launched on 14 May 2021 as a series of public art initiatives in Lincoln's Sincil Bank area. London-based French artist Zabou created the project's first work, a large-scale spray-painted mural on a Kirkby Street terrace wall. This mural depicts Sir Isaac Newton, a Lincolnshire-born historical figure, holding a prism toward light, rendered in grey tones surrounded by color. Residents offered their exterior walls for artworks, aiming to convey local stories through visual creativity. While Zabou has a solo exhibition scheduled later at Saatchi Gallery, this community project focuses on accessibility and neighborhood engagement rather than individual artistic recognition. Street art like this provides art without traditional gallery constraints, becoming part of daily life as people pass by during routine activities. Similar community impact was seen in Nottingham when a Banksy piece appeared, drawing local crowds until its controversial removal. Lincoln's art scene has historically emphasized historic identity like the Magna Carta over contemporary works, despite having student populations and transportation links to Nottingham and Sheffield. The project website is sincilbankartproject.co.uk, and Zabou's site is zabou.me.
