Liminal Space: New Rome Venue Dedicated to Digital Art Opens June 21

On June 21, 2024, Liminal Space will open in Rome's Ostiense district at Via Libetta 21, a new exhibition space entirely dedicated to digital and transmedia art. Founded by artists Gregorio de Luca Comandini and Saverio Villirillo, the venue replaces their former collective NONE (active 2014–2022, with Mauro Pace leaving in 2022). The opening features a participatory performance where attendees will symbolically demolish a wall, writing messages on it before breaking it down. Liminal Space aims to foster a network for digital and new media art in Rome, addressing what the founders see as a lack of dedicated venues and community. The program includes two annual exhibitions (spring and autumn) and monthly Simposio events with talks and live performances, drawing on the artists' experience with the Simposio camp/community that began in 2018 in their studio and later moved to Borca di Cadore in the Dolomites. The space will also host open calls for emerging digital artists, particularly those from new academic specialization courses. The founders emphasize that their transmedia aesthetic seeks to engage with contemporary social and political issues, rejecting purely spectacular or entertainment-driven immersive art. The venue is located in the same studio they have occupied for ten years.
