Liliana Moro and Milovan Farronato discuss Italian Pavilion at 2019 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Milovan Farronato curates the Italian Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, featuring artists Liliana Moro, Enrico David, and the late Chiara Fumai (1978–2017). The pavilion, located in the Giardini, presents Fumai's large mural titled 'This last line cannot be translated' publicly for the first time. Originally conceived for a 2017 exhibition at The Breeder in Athens, the work features a continuous black line with cursive script invoking the 'Mass of Chaos' from Peter J. Carroll's 1987 book 'Liber Null & Psychonaut'. Moro contributes a wide selection of works, including two new pieces created specifically for the Biennale, tracing her own path within the exhibition itinerary. Farronato notes Fumai's work was developed during her residency at ISCP in New York through conversations with him in London, reflecting transnational influences. Moro expresses honor in representing Italian cultural and artistic developments over the past 30 years, despite current political complexities. She participated in the 1993 Biennale curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and previously taught at IUAV University in Venice. The Italian Pavilion was reinstated in 2007 after an absence from 1999 to 2005, with the first exhibition featuring Giuseppe Penone and Francesco Vezzoli curated by Ida Gianelli. The 2019 Venice Biennale runs from May 11 to November 24.
