Lightquake 2017: Black Light Art and Light Art in Spoleto and Gubbio
Two Umbrian cities, Spoleto and Gubbio, are jointly hosting light art exhibitions from December to February as part of the Lightquake 2017 project. The initiative, conceived by Mariacristina Ferraioli, aims to raise funds for the restoration of cultural heritage damaged by the 2016 earthquake in central Italy. In Spoleto, the Rocca Albornoz will feature Black Light Art – La luce che colora il buio, showcasing works using ultraviolet black light that react with special pigments to emerge from darkness. In Gubbio, the Palazzo Ducale will host Light Art, including an installation by Federica Marangoni in the courtyard and works by Stefano Frascarelli and Saverio Mercati inside. Fifteen Italian artists are participating. The project draws inspiration from Turin's Luci d'Artista, a contemporary art exhibition that has illuminated the city's squares and streets for twenty years. This marks the first time two cities in the same region have collaborated on such a synchronized light art initiative.
