Life-Size Marble Hercules Statue Unearthed on Via Appia Antica
A life-size marble statue of a figure depicted as Hercules has been discovered on the Via Appia Antica in Rome during sewer maintenance work. The statue was found in Parco Scott, between Via Cristoforo Colombo and the Via Appia Antica, during operations conducted by Acea Gruppo and Bacino Sud SRL. The discovery occurred as workers cleared and repaired a collapsed conduit from the last century, moving earth up to twenty meters deep. The area, near the Sepolcro di Priscilla at the second mile of the Via Appia, is of both landscape and archaeological interest, so the work was supervised by archaeologists led by Federica Acierno. The statue is identified as Hercules by the presence of a club and lion skin (leontè) covering its head. Simone Quilici, director of the Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica, stated that the photos do not convey its real size and that it likely depicts an important personality of the era. He noted that while encountering ancient artifacts in Rome is not rare, this find is particularly significant. The statue may be displayed at the Casale di Santa Maria Nova as part of the exhibition 'Patrimonium Appiae – Depositi emersi', running until June 30, if timing allows. The Via Appia Antica, built in 312 BC and connecting Rome to Brindisi, is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status and continues to yield important archaeological finds.
