Life Beyond Plastic: call for artists to create public art from reused plastic

other · 2026-05-04

Life Beyond Plastic is a call for young artists aged 18-40 residing in Italy to design site-specific public installations made from reused plastic, addressing marine plastic pollution. The deadline is November 15, 2019. Three winning artists will each receive €8,000 and participate in an artistic residency to realize their works for three venues: the Aquarium of Genoa, Piazza XXIV Maggio in Milan, and MUSE – Museo delle Scienze in Trento. The installations will be displayed in Milan for two weeks starting early June 2020, in Trento for three months from February 2020, and in Genoa for five months from February 2020. The initiative is part of a broader project by Istituto Oikos, with partners HelpCode Italia, Aquarium of Genoa, Comune di Milano, and MUSE, involving 7 Italian regions (Trentino, Lombardy, Liguria, Marche, Campania, Calabria, Sicily). It includes workshops for 2,000 students, training for 120 teachers, a network of "plastic less" schools, and 180 active students for sustainability. The jury is chaired by Stefano Boeri (architect and president of Fondazione La Triennale di Milano) and includes artistic director Maria Cristina Finucci (architect, designer, artist, founder of Garbage Patch State), David Tombolato (curator at MUSE), Lorenzo Facchinelli (artist and member of Mali Weil), and Marco Faimali (researcher at ISMAR-CNR). Selected artists will be announced on the Oikos website by November 25, 2019.
