Lido BAM: Milan's Green Beach Among Skyscrapers
Milan, lacking a sea, has created Lido BAM, a beach-like urban oasis within the Biblioteca degli Alberi park in Porta Nuova. The initiative by Fondazione Riccardo Catella, managing the park for the city, features 80 spaced sunbeds and umbrellas to ensure COVID-19 safety. Project Manager Filippo Fantini explains the aim is to foster public space culture, combining relaxation with cultural programming. The design by Dutch landscape architect Petra Blaisse (Inside Outside) uses concentric circles echoing tree patterns, with wooden umbrellas symbolizing an augmented forest. Collaborators include design studio Gioforma and greenery firm Hw-Style. The Lido is open until August 31, 2020, with free entry the first week, then a maintenance fee or annual BAMFRIEND membership for free access. Reservations via the Portanuova Milano app are required.
