Libeskind and Luxembourg Curate Modernist Sculpture Show in New York
Architect Daniel Libeskind and gallerist Daniella Luxembourg have co-curated "Figures Toward Abstraction: Sculptures 1910 to 1940" at Luxembourg & Dayan in New York, running until July 1, 2017. The exhibition features works by Rudolf Belling, Alberto Giacometti, Julio González, Henri Laurens, Jacques Lipchitz, and Henri Matisse, displayed across three floors in an installation designed by Libeskind. It includes Belling's "Dreiklang" (1919), one of the first fully abstract sculptures of the 20th century, exhibited for the first time in the US. The show follows Luxembourg & Dayan's earlier London exhibition on Giacometti's Cubist period (1925–1934). Libeskind and Luxembourg's collaboration stems from a decade-long dialogue on abstraction in art, architecture, history, and life. The exhibition is introduced by a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Archaic Torso of Apollo," and maintains the human body—particularly the traditional nude—as a structural base.
