Lia Cecchin's Neon Transforms Historic Ansaldo Sign in Genoa

other · 2026-04-27

The iconic 'Ansaldo' sign, created by Sottsass Associati in the 1980s for the old NIRA building on Via dei Pescatori in Genoa, has been preserved and transformed into a public art piece. Rescued from demolition during the waterfront redevelopment spearheaded by Renzo Piano, it now resides in the park of Museo di Villa Croce, where it can be seen from the street. This initiative, led by Associazione AMIXI per l'Arte Contemporanea and the Comune di Genova as part of the Fondamenta1 public art program, featured a curated selection involving ten Italian artists, including Lia Cecchin, who won with her piece 'Una città cancella, l’altra scrive', showcasing the neon phrase 'un momentaccio!'. Inspired by a 1976 photo by Gio' Palazzo depicting graffiti in Turin, the work's message has become increasingly relevant, especially post-COVID-19. Curator Luca Cerizza highlighted its significance as a tribute to street art and a beacon of hope in challenging times. The installation is situated at Parco di Villa Croce, Via Jacopo Ruffini, 3, Genoa.
