Lia and Dan Perjovschi's Retrospective at Nasher Museum Traces Romanian Experimental Art Evolution

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Duke University's Nasher Museum hosted the first retrospective of Romanian artists Lia and Dan Perjovschi from August 2007 to January 2008. Curated by Professor Kristine Stiles, the exhibition titled "The States of Mind" presented their artistic evolution through drawings, objects, installations, and detailed documentation. Both artists emerged during Romania's communist era, with Dan using drawing as survival commentary and Lia developing body drawings as discrete messages through mail art networks. Their early works like Dan's "Alone and Grey" (1989) and Lia's "The Sleep Test" (1988) reflected oppressive states of mind. Post-1990 installations such as Dan's "Anthropoteque" and Lia's "Impression Folder" led to their first joint exhibition. Dan's practice evolved into performance-based wall drawings at venues including Tate Modern (2006) and MoMA (2007), while Lia shifted toward conceptual diagrams and research archives. The exhibition featured site-specific drawings by Dan in the museum's stained glass hall and was accompanied by a debate titled "Perspectives on Romanian Culture: Then and Now" with Romanian curators and art historians. A comprehensive catalogue documented their careers and Romanian context. The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York provided support for the accompanying programs.
