Lewis Lee's Blue Hour explores Hong Kong borderlands through twilight painting

In 2024, Lewis Lee, an artist originally from Hong Kong and currently residing in Thailand, produced the artwork titled Blue Hour. This painting portrays a rural border town situated just north of Hong Kong during the fleeting twilight that follows sunset. Lee's artistic endeavors encompass painting, installation, and photography, viewing landscapes as reflections of memory, migration, and identity. His latest creations reinterpret the borderlands of Hong Kong as locations where personal stories converge with colonial history and urban development. While Blue Hour may first seem like an idyllic depiction of countryside life through a window, it ultimately reveals itself as a reflection in the glass of an empty, darkened home, capturing the transition from sunset to the flickering street lights.
