Lewis Collection Worth $200M to Be Auctioned at Sotheby’s London

market-auction · 2026-04-30

Sotheby’s will auction over 50 works from the collection of billionaire Joe Lewis in June, expected to exceed $200 million. The sale follows a successful March auction of School of London works from the same collection that brought $47.7 million. Highlights include Gustav Klimt's 1902 portrait of Gertha Felsőványi (est. $27–40 million), Amedeo Modigliani's Homme à la Pipe (est. $16–24 million), and Lucian Freud's Woman in a Grey Sweater (est. $4–6 million). The Klimt portrait, acquired by Lewis in 2015 for $38.9 million, previously hung on his yacht. Other fresh-to-market pieces include Gustave Caillebotte's Portrait de Paul Hugot (last shown 50 years ago) and Chaïm Soutine's Portrait de garçon en bleu (last seen 60 years ago). A selection will be previewed at Sotheby’s New York from May 2–18, including a Pablo Picasso drawing of Dora Maar and an early Egon Schiele painting. Lewis, who pleaded guilty to insider trading in 2024 and was pardoned by President Trump in November, built the collection with his daughter Vivienne.
