Letizia Battaglia retrospective at Palazzo di Città, Cagliari

A major retrospective of photographer Letizia Battaglia (1935–2022) opened at Palazzo di Città in Cagliari, promoted by the municipality. Curated by Paolo Falcone, the exhibition, titled 'Senza Fine,' previously appeared at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome in 2023. The installation avoids chronological or thematic order, using self-supporting plexiglass and steel structures inspired by Lina Bo Bardi's crystal easels. It opens with a poignant image of a patient at Palermo's psychiatric hospital offering a flower. The show documents Battaglia's lifelong fight against the mafia and discrimination, featuring images of the triple murder at Piazza Sant'Oliva, the Vucciria massacre, the arrest of Leoluca Bagarella, the ambush of judge Cesare Terranova, and the desk of Boris Luciano after his assassination. A portrait of Rosa Schifani, widow of escort agent Vito killed alongside judge Falcone, closes the mafia section. The exhibition also includes portraits of Franca Rame, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Renato Guttuso, and Leonardo Sciascia, as well as children, women, and psychiatric patients. The catalog, published by Electa and co-edited by Paolo Falcone and Sabrina Pisu, features contributions from seven writers including Dacia Maraini, each using a letter from the title to explore aspects of Battaglia's life.
