other · 2026-04-27

A two-part miniseries titled 'Solo per passione' about the life of photographer Letizia Battaglia, who died on April 13, 2022 at age 87, will air on Rai1 on May 22 and 23. Directed by Roberto Andò, a fellow Palermitan and close friend, the film stars Isabella Ragonese as Battaglia. A preview screening will take place on May 20 at the Cinema Rouge et Noir in Palermo, attended by Battaglia's loved ones. The broadcast coincides with the 30th anniversary of Giovanni Falcone's death; Battaglia documented the anti-mafia struggle alongside Falcone. The film covers Battaglia's childhood, adolescence, and adult battles, featuring subjects from her iconic photographs: mafia figures, ordinary people, children, and historical figures like Falcone, Leonardo Sciascia, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Battaglia collaborated on the production, supervising scenes and details. Andò described her as a woman who rebelled against a subordinate destiny, becoming a fighter recognized as one of the world's greatest photographers; in 2017, The New York Times listed her among the eleven most representative women globally. Through empathy and compassion, her photography aimed to improve Sicily and Italy.
