Les Rencontres d'Arles 2011: Photography's 10th Edition Under François Hebel

The 2011 edition of Les Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles marks the 10th anniversary of François Hebel's directorship, which began in 2001. New president Jean-Noël Jeannerey describes the program as dense, heterogeneous, and audacious. A major focus is Mexican photography from its origins to the present day. Highlights include the exhibition of Robert Capa's 'Mexican suitcase,' reports commissioned by the New York Times Magazine, the 20th anniversary of the collective Tendance Floue, and the 10th edition of the Prix Découverte. The manifesto exhibition 'From here on' features works by about thirty artists who source images from the Internet, including Doug Rickard, Jenny Odell, Claudia Sola, and Jens Sundheim (with his work 'The Get Out Clause'). Curated by Clément Chéroux, Joan Fontcuberta, Erik Kessels, Martin Parr, and Joachim Schmid, the show raises debates about the relevance of specialized photography institutions in 2011. Tendance Floue presents two spaces: 'Passage à l'acte' with dynamic displays of collective projects like 'Mad in India' and 'Mad in China,' and a separate room for individual works by its fourteen members. The Méjan chapel, in collaboration with Fondation Lambert in Avignon, features portraits by Miquel Barceló, works by Douglas Gordon including '24 Hour Psycho,' and the exhibition 'Le Temps retrouvé: Cy Twombly photographe et artistes invités.' The festival runs from July 4 to September 18, 2011, in various venues across Arles.
