Les Inventions photographiques du paysage explores landscape photography's history and theory

Edited by Pierre-Henry Frangne and Patricia Limido, the book 'Les Inventions photographiques du paysage' includes fifteen essays centered on photography and landscapes, organized into four main themes. It revisits Georg Simmel's concept of Stimmung to delve into the dialectic of milieu-gaze. Historical analysis highlights the impact of American photographers on Europeans like Jean-Marc Bustamante and Joachim Brohm around 1980. John Brinckerhoff Jackson's 'Landscape' magazine, established in 1951, examined roadside scenery, connecting to Ed Ruscha and Stephen Shore. Marta Daho discusses the influence of European cinema on Shore and Guidi. The volume also features experimental works by Éric Bourret and Homma Takashi, while Raphaële Bertho critiques the unfulfilled promise of highways in altering landscapes. Published by Presses universitaires de Rennes, it spans 214 pages and is priced at 29 euros. An exhibition is on display at Pavillon populaire de Montpellier from February 8 to April 16, 2017.
