Leonora Carrington's Domestic Surrealism Revealed in San Francisco Exhibition

Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco presents 'Mythopoesis,' an exhibition showcasing Leonora Carrington's lesser-known domestic objects alongside her paintings, highlighting her versatility across mediums. The show features 15 works primarily from personal collections, including textiles, toys, and games created in Mexico after her 1942 relocation from Europe. A standout piece is 'La cuna (The Cradle)' (c. 1945), a large painted sailboat collaboratively carved by José Horna and painted by Carrington to mark the birth of Norah Horna. This work displays imagery of cloaked giraffes, an upright fish, a vulture with a harp, and celestial symbols. Another intimate creation is an untitled 1946 papier-mâché and metal carriage gifted to Norah, featuring a black bird and hybrid horse-human figures. The exhibition includes the game board prototype 'Rueda de los caballos' (c. 1954), developed for the toy company Juguetes Norah, which Carrington co-founded with Horna and Remedios Varo. Carrington's paintings like 'Sidhe, the White People of Tuatha de Danaan' (1954) and 'Equinoxio' (1958) are displayed alongside these functional items, reflecting her home studio practice in Mexico City that blended art with daily life. The show runs through March 15, 2025, challenging contemporary market categorizations by presenting works made for children alongside gallery pieces.
