Leonora Carrington Biopic 'Leonora in the Morning Light' Premieres at Munich and Guadalajara Film Festivals

A new film about surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, titled 'Leonora in the Morning Light,' has been co-directed by Thor Klein and Lena Vurma. Based on Elena Poniatowska's bestseller 'Leonora' (published in Germany as 'La donna del vento'), the movie had dual world premieres at the 42nd Munich Film Festival and the 40th Guadalajara International Film Festival in Mexico. The plot follows Carrington in the 1930s as she breaks social conventions, joins the Surrealist movement in Paris, meets Salvador Dalí and André Breton, and embarks on a self-discovery journey through her tumultuous love affair with Max Ernst. In Mexico, she finds freedom and her artistic voice. British actress Olivia Vinall portrays Carrington, with Alexander Scheer as Max Ernst, Cassandra Ciangherotti as Remedios Varo, Ryan Gage as Edward James, Mercedes Bahleda as Peggy Guggenheim, Denis Eyriey as André Breton, and Cat Jugravu as Salvador Dalí. The film is an international co-production between Germany, Romania, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. It was completed after a Kickstarter campaign raised £40,000 for visual effects following lost funding. 'Leonora in the Morning Light' will be released in German cinemas on July 17, 2025.
