Leonor Antunes's site-specific installation transforms former Sharjah hospital for 2015 biennial

opinion-review · 2026-04-20

For Sharjah Biennial 12, Leonor Antunes designed 'The Unpredictability of Possible Future Uses,' which spans a corridor and five rooms within a repurposed hospital in Old Sharjah. This installation incorporates metal lamps, concrete tables, linoleum mats, wooden screens, brass webs, handwoven nets, leather accents, and ropes. Antunes employs a minimalist style that highlights the repetition of similar components. The piece draws inspiration from historical references, such as 150 BC mudbrick tombs in Malta, local nomadic palm-leaf mats, Amazonian hammock craftsmanship, and the designs of Greta Magnusson-Grossman, particularly the Grasshopper lamp (1948). The renovated space symbolizes urban gentrification. Other featured artists include Michael Joo and Haegue Yang. The biennial took place from March 5 to June 5, 2015, with a review by Maria Lind in ArtReview's May 2015 issue.
