Leonardo Savioli: The Beloved Architect Who Bridged Art and Architecture

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Leonardo Savioli (died 1982) was a highly esteemed Italian architect and professor at the University of Florence, admired by students and peers including Giovanni Michelucci, Leonardo Ricci, Giulio Carlo Argan, Bruno Zevi, and Adolfo Natalini. His work includes the Mercato dei Fiori in Pescia (1950-51, with Leonardo Ricci) and a later version (1970-1988) with a cable-stayed structure that anticipated the Centre Pompidou (1971) by Gianfranco Franchini, Renzo Piano, and Richard Rogers. Savioli also designed Villa Bayon in San Gaggio, Florence, and a house and studio in Galluzzo. He was an accomplished painter influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Informel, known for drawing with both hands simultaneously. His teaching emphasized space as tangible, influenced by Cézanne and Cubism. Assistants included Vittorio Giorgini, Adolfo Natalini (Superstudio), and Paolo Deganello (Archizoom). In the late 1960s, his course focused on discotheques, reflecting pop culture. Despite his artistic sophistication, his brutalist buildings like the house on via Piagentina and Sorgane residential interventions were less appreciated. Critics Zevi and Argan noted a tension between rationality and Informel in his architecture. Savioli lived a monastic life with his wife, artist Flora Wiechmann, and died in 1982. His legacy awaits full understanding of the relationship between his art and architecture.
