Leonardo's Last Supper viewable in ultra-high definition online
For Easter 2021, Italy's lockdown (now called 'red zone') prevents museum visits, so the Direzione Regionale Musei Lombardia and Haltadefinizione have launched 'A tavola, con Leonardo', a free virtual tour of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. The fresco, painted between 1494 and 1498 in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, is presented in 16.1 gigapixel resolution, originally captured in 2007 as the world's largest digital image. The website of the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano allows viewers to examine every brushstroke and discover the foods depicted, which reflect 15th-century eating habits rather than traditional Passover fare. Haltadefinizione founder Luca Ponzio notes the company's prior collaborations with Pinacoteca di Brera, Uffizi, and Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze. Regional director Emanuela Daffra emphasizes that digital cannot replace the in-person emotional experience but offers impossible close-ups beyond conservation limits, revealing technical secrets and unnoticed details.
