Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Atlanticus debuts in Australia with immersive digital exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Codex Atlanticus by Leonardo da Vinci is being shown in Australia for the first time at THE LUME Melbourne, a permanent digital art and immersive culture venue inside the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on the banks of the Birrarung (Yarra River). The exhibition, titled "Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius presented by Webuild," opens on March 16. Bruce Peterson, founder of THE LUME Melbourne, stated that the pages of the Codex Atlanticus offer access to Leonardo's genius and that their arrival in Australia provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity for visitors. In addition to original pages loaned from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, the show features scale mechanical inventions built by Italian artisans, the world's only exact 360-degree replica of the Mona Lisa, a new immersive experience in a 3,000-square-meter multisensory gallery, interactive AI and VR technologies, and a Renaissance-themed dining experience at the revamped Caffè Medici.
