Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition in Livorno Features Original Codice Atlantico Drawings

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A major exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci will boost Christmas tourism in Livorno, the 'Little Venice of Tuscany' on the Costa degli Etruschi. At the Museo della Città, from December 20, 2023 to April 1, 2024, the show titled 'Leonardo da Vinci. Bellezza e invenzione' presents original drawings by the Renaissance master. Fifteen autograph drawings from the Codice Atlantico, lent by the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, and the Codice sul Volo degli Uccelli from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin are on display. Also featured is a grotesque autograph drawing by Leonardo, once owned by Livorno rabbi Ilo Giacomo Nunes, who offered it around 1925-1926 to Paul Joseph Sax, director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who was in Italy to promote diagnostic analysis in art. The exhibition includes about 70 works and aims to attract numerous visitors, giving a boost to the Museo della Città, which has recently hosted shows on Modigliani, Banksy, and Puccini.
