León Ferrari's 'Nosotros no sabíamos' Compiles Censored News of Argentina's Dictatorship

León Ferrari's work 'Nosotros no sabíamos' (We Didn't Know) is an incomplete compilation of news published in 1976 newspapers about the early phases of repression under Videla's junta in Argentina. The news stories that slipped through censorship or were allowed to spread fear are collected, showing the atmosphere of terror and the extent of knowledge of those who dismissed crimes with 'there must be a reason for it'—later replaced by 'we didn't know'. Ferrari notes missing reports on Church complicity, including the Church seeking pardon for convicts and Nuncio Calabresi inviting them to celebrate John Paul II's papacy in October 1991. The material was compiled in 1976, with four copies published in Brazil that year, three more in São Paulo in 1984, and four as part of the '500 años de represión' exhibit at Centro Recoleta in August 1992. Ferrari signed the text in Buenos Aires, 1992. The compilation draws from newspapers including Buenos Aires Herald, Clarín, Crónica, La Nación, Le Monde, La Opinión, La Prensa, La Razón, and La Voz del Interior. From 1992 onwards, around 20 photocopies were made each year upon request.
