Leo Villareal's Illuminated River Project Lights Up London's Thames Bridges

artist · 2026-05-04

Following his monumental LED installation The Bay Lights on San Francisco's Oakland Bay Bridge, American artist Leo Villareal (b. 1967) has turned his focus to London with the ongoing Illuminated River project. The initiative involves illuminating fifteen bridges across the River Thames with varied color and form configurations. Currently, four installations are operational: London Bridge, Cannon Street Railway Bridge, Southwark Bridge, and Millennium Bridge. A video released by the project showcases renderings of the entire series. Villareal stated, 'The most important thing for me is to create a monumental public artwork. Free and available to everyone. Everyone can look at it and have a reaction to it. I want to do something that makes sense and is 'sensitive'.' The project is documented at www.illuminatedriver.london.
