Leica Camera AG partners with Chinese sensor maker Gpixel to co-develop bespoke high-performance image sensor
Leica Camera AG has joined forces with Gpixel to develop a cutting-edge image sensor tailored for future Leica cameras, departing from the standard Sony sensors utilized in the M11-generation rangefinder models. Previously, Leica had worked with AMS OSRAM to produce a 24-megapixel sensor for the M10 series. Gpixel, located in Changchun, specializes in manufacturing sensors for medical, scientific, and professional imaging applications. This collaboration intends to deliver a sensor that meets Leica's rigorous standards for color accuracy, noise reduction, dynamic range, and resolution. In December, Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of Leica's Supervisory Board, hinted at this initiative during the 'Leica Enthusiast Podcast.' Gpixel's CEO, Xinyang Wang, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership's potential to empower photographers.
