artist · 2026-04-27

Mick Rock, the legendary photographer who captured iconic images of David Bowie, Queen, Lou Reed, and other rock stars, has died at age 72. The announcement was made via his Twitter account: "With the saddest of hearts we announce that our beloved psychedelic Mick Rock has made the Jungian journey to the other side." Born Michael David Rock in London in 1948, he studied Medieval Poetry at Cambridge University and began photographing concerts during his university years. His career breakthrough came in 1972 when he met David Bowie and became his official photographer, creating iconic images of Ziggy Stardust and directing music videos for "Space Oddity," "Jean Genie," and "John, I'm Only Dancing." He also shot album covers for Lou Reed's "Transformer" and "Coney Island Baby," Iggy Pop and the Stooges' "Raw Power," Ramones' "End of the Century," and Queen's "Queen II," the latter inspiring the "Bohemian Rhapsody" video. His subjects included Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, Madonna, Snoop Dogg, and Lady Gaga.
