Leeum Museum Revives Women-Led Immersive Art from 1956–1976

exhibition · 2026-05-25

The Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul is showcasing 'Inside Other Spaces: Environments by Women Artists 1956–1976,' an extensive exhibition highlighting immersive environments crafted by women artists long before installation art gained popularity. This exhibition, which first opened at Munich's Haus der Kunst in 2023, will be available until November 29, 2026. It includes reconstructed pieces from artists such as Lygia Clark, Marta Minujín, Nanda Vigo, Tsuruko Yamazaki, Judy Chicago, Tania Mouraud, Aleksandra Kasuba, Laura Grisi, Lea Lublin, as well as Korean artists Jung Kangja and Jung Hee Choi. The earliest work featured is Tsuruko Yamazaki's 'Red' from 1956. The Seoul iteration broadens the original by including more Korean and Asian artists, with many environments needing reconstruction from archival sources due to their temporary nature. Visitors can experience installations made with mirrors, translucent elements, sound, air currents, and tactile surfaces that blur the lines between the viewer and the artwork.
