Lee Mingwei's Berlin exhibition delayed by pandemic, features digital activations and collaborative peace installation

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Lee Mingwei's inaugural solo exhibition in Europe, initially scheduled for March 27 at Berlin's Gropius Bau, will now physically debut on May 4 because of COVID-19. The Taiwanese artist has developed two digital projects: Invitation for Dawn, which features one-on-one video performances with an opera singer, and Letter to Oneself, which encourages the public to submit self-addressed letters. His exhibition, titled 禮Li, Gifts and Rituals, delves into Confucian ideas surrounding rituals and gift-giving. A significant piece, Our Peaceable Kingdom (2020), showcases 27 artworks by 11 international artists, reimagining Edward Hicks's 1833 Peaceable Kingdom. Lee lives in New York with his husband John and frequently travels between New York, Paris, and Taipei. Local artists finished the Gropius Bau installation after Lee's departure due to travel limitations.
