Lee Bontecou Returns with Drawings Exhibition at Knoedler & Company After 30-Year Absence
From May 6 to July 30, 2004, Knoedler & Company in New York showcases 37 untitled drawings by Lee Bontecou, created between 1958 and 1999. This exhibition marks her first significant public presentation since 1971. Once a notable figure in Leo Castelli's roster alongside Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, Bontecou stepped back due to challenges with critical reception and competition with her spouse, Bill Giles. While teaching at Brooklyn College, she continued her artistic endeavors. The drawings display her characteristic radial forms, which draw on science fiction motifs and resist straightforward interpretations. Curated by Elizabeth A.T. Smith, this exhibition coincides with a retrospective traveling from the Hammer Museum to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Additionally, Kimberly Venardos gallery features Sarah G. Austin's assemblages from April 22 to May 29, 2004.
