Lebanon Urges UNESCO Intervention Over Potential Destruction of Protected 12th-Century Citadel

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-19

Lebanon's Ministry of Culture has reached out to UNESCO regarding the possible destruction of the Chama' Citadel, a fortress dating back to the 12th century, amid Israeli military actions. This site was granted UNESCO's highest level of protection in 2024 following previous damage. On April 13, Lebanese officials requested urgent intervention from UNESCO, highlighting reports of bulldozers causing destruction. Israeli forces are currently in control of the area, complicating damage assessments. A 10-day ceasefire, announced by Donald Trump, might facilitate access. Samar Karam observed smoke near the site, though thorough analysis was limited. Additionally, Culture Minister Ghassan Salamé filed another complaint with UNESCO for the protection of Chama' Citadel and other historical locations. Since March, the death toll has exceeded 2,000, including 172 children.
