Leandro Katz's Guerrilla Image Investigation Opens PROA 21 in Buenos Aires

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In April, Buenos Aires's Boca neighborhood welcomed PROA 21, a new venue dedicated to emerging art, featuring "Proyecto para El dia que me quieras" by Argentine artist Leandro Katz. This exhibition showcases nine installations created between 1993 and 2007, along with two films that delve into Ernesto "Che" Guevara's defeat in Bolivia during the late 1960s. Katz, now 80, initiated this project in 1987, centering on Freddy Alborta's iconic image of Guevara's body taken on October 10, 1967. The films include discussions with Alborta and forensic specialist Alejandro Incháurregui. Additionally, the exhibition displays contact sheets, a timeline derived from over ten sources, and nods to Mónica Ertl and Haydeé Tamara Bunke Bider. Curator Cuauhtémoc Medina emphasizes Katz's investigation beyond the confines of the photograph.
