Leandro Erlich's Illusory Clouds and Impossible Works at Galleria Continua
Galleria Continua in San Gimignano presents 'Un volo notturno dietro una finestra murata', a solo exhibition by Argentine artist Leandro Erlich (born 1973 in Buenos Aires), running at the Arco dei Becci space. The show features installations including his signature clouds, which create an illusion of three-dimensionality through superimposed images on layered plates, revealing different aspects of reality as the viewer moves—a nod to relativity and quantum physics. Erlich draws on science and Baroque aesthetics to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. The exhibition also includes 'Blind Window', a brick window suspended in mid-air, and the video installation 'Night Fly', offering a nocturnal view from airplane portholes that connects interior and exterior, earth and sky. Erlich's clouds, which he calls 'a primordial form of art', encourage viewers to abandon certainty and embrace uncertainty with a playful, childlike wonder. His works are held in major museums including Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and Macro Rome. In 2001, he represented Argentina at the 49th Venice Biennale. The exhibition references a lineage of cloud-inspired artists and poets from Baudelaire to Fellini, Polanski, Alda Merini, and Zen monk Ikkyu Sojun, whose poetry collection 'Clouds Wandering' celebrated enlightenment amidst everyday life.
